Hydrogen Sussex

Hydrogen Sussex is a new body supporting and facilitating the hydrogen economy across Sussex. We bring together key players across the public and private sectors to promote hydrogen technology, support local supply chains, and to make Sussex a leader in a clean hydrogen economy.

The group is committed to raising awareness and developing opportunities for clean hydrogen as a key energy vector in the transition to net zero carbon emissions.

Hydrogen Sussex emerged from the Greater Brighton Energy Plan work in 2020 carried out under the Greater Brighton Economic Board and the Greater Brighton Infrastructure Panel.

Our Purpose & Our Aims

Hydrogen Sussex brings together:

  • local authorities and other public sector organisations
  • transport companies
  • engineering companies
  • utility companies
  • universities
  • engineers, economists and scientists

Hydrogen Sussex aims to:

  • build and grow local hydrogen production and storage
  • support the uptake of hydrogen for transport and other applications
  • demonstrate a scalable hydrogen economy

To achieve this we will:

  • Identify future demand for hydrogen in heavy vehicle fleets including buses, refuse vehicles and HGVs) and other applications, including shore power
  • Support collaboration between members, particularly around establishing trial projects to retrofit vehicles
  • Identify funding streams to support investment in hydrogen infrastructure.
  • Develop a project pipeline across the hydrogen value chain, helping to create a practical vision of a hydrogen economy in our area.
  • Support members to apply for funding for their projects
  • Work with universities on hydrogen research projects
